Subsidized Alarms

In the past 5 years several large national alarm companies have been installing subsidized alarm systems. They discount the actual cost of the alarm system by $400 to $500 and sign the customer to a two to five year monitoring agreement at $24.95 to $39.95 per month. The subsidy can be a good value provided that the alarm and the contract contain the following characteristics:

  • 1. The alarm control panel is not proprietary and can be monitored with any central station.
  • 2. The alarm system is the sole property of the customer at the end of the monitoring agreement.
  • 3. The alarm company will unlock the panel or give the customer any installer codes or unlock codes at the termination of the contract.

The program of subsidized alarm systems would be a good program for the customer over many years if the large alarm companies would adjust the monitoring fees after the customer had paid for the subsidy over the term of the initial contract. Unfortunately they do not lower the price and what was a bargain on the initial contract is a heavy penalty from there on as the customer is obliged to pay for their alarm again and again.

Self-Installed Alarm Systems: Many people install their own alarm systems. It is very important that when you install your own alarm system, you use good industrial grade alarm equipment. Do not use equipment from your hardware store, discount warehouse stores, Radio Shack or other consumer retailers. Quality industrial alarm equipment can be purchased from Affordablemonitoring or from their authorized dealers.
